Singapore Writers Festival 19 November 2023
'Hot Off The Press', The Arts House, Gallery II, 2-3pm, FREE
The Singapore Writers Festival is back for another year and I’m honoured to be part of the lineup of a conversation with Singapore-based authors and their new releases on Sunday 19 November. I recently joined a book club meeting that read ‘In Such Tremendous Heat’, and some of the questions focused on the decision to centre three black women as the protagonists in Asia.
So I’m looking forward to discussing this perspective as well as all things writing, books and media with Singaporean writers who bring such a wide range of ideas, genres, target audiences and creativity to the conversation. The SWF runs from 17-26 November and I’ve listed some of the events I’m most excited about below.
Here is some information about the recent releases and authors I’ll be chatting with on the 19th of November.
‘Lost Treasure of the Lanfang Republic’ by Tan Lip Hong (Epigram Books) is an 18th century adventure tale that weaves history, mystery and transatlantic travel.
‘Sweet Braised Duck’ by Chew Ngee Tan (Penguin) follows a hawker rice seller on his journey from China to Singapore as he struggles with poverty and harsh family circumstances to realise his dream of setting up his own business.
Jacinth Tan is the creator and co-director of ‘Sharkdog’, the wildly popular Netflix Original Series and Nickelodeon Asia’s first short-form animated series. She is also the creative Director at Moonbug One Animation Studios Singapore for Oddbods spin-off series, Minibods, and her wealth of experience in animation and children’s entertainment will be fascinating for those interested in this aspect of media. She is also taking part in a second event on the 26th of Novembe, ‘Cartoons aren’t just for kids.’
See you at 2pm on the 19th of November for this free event!
