'In Such Tremendous Heat' Book Cover Reveal!

It's a scorcher!

This past week has been an exciting and poignant one for me. After so many years working on my debut novel, it has been surreal watching it be unveiled on social media. It’s been a lot of fun watching potential readers respond with excitement at the stunning book design, the beauty and skill of which I can’t take any responsibility for!

The importance of a great book cover cannot be overestimated. It somehow has to capture the mood of the book and the themes in the book, compliment the title and draw the viewer in.

The process of working with my publishers and agent to get to this point has been a satisfying one. I was asked to create a mood board with book covers I liked and images I felt reflected the setting, atmosphere and tone. Even though writers don’t have the final say on the book cover, no one wants a book cover their author doesn’t like! So it was reassuring to be able to communicate how I visualised the cover, even if I couldn’t quite articulate it.

When I was emailed the design, I (and the whole team) were blown away. There were literally no words…and that’s rare! There were a couple small changes, playing with the font and colour contrast between the shades of orange but little else. (Randomly, burnt orange is my mother’s favourite colour!)

The journey to the book cover was tied with the journey of choosing a book title, the culmination of which led us to two titles: In Such Tremendous Heat (Dialogue Books in the UK) and The Sun Sets In Singapore (Grand Central Publishing, US). Although we initially had two different book covers, both publishers went with this same cover in the end and I’m thrilled they did.

I love the colour palette, the model’s sultry beauty and the pattern! If you look closely, you’ll spot the Singapore Lion motif woven into it. It is clever, and punchy, arresting but textured. I’m so incredibly proud of the design team and I hope it feels as good in readers hands as it looks.
